Tax Day
Evanston Post Office Protest
Evanston Post Office on Tuesday,
April 17 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Wearing large signs, members of Neighbors for Peace, the North Shore Coalition for Peace and Justice, and other peace groups will distribute leaflets from the War Resisters League titled “Where your Income Tax Money Really Goes.” The leaflets show how the budget published by the federal government hides the true percentage spent on war and will alert those filing last-minute tax returns to the cuts in human services that the Iraq war has caused.
The government’s view of the 2008 budget, published as a pie chart in the Washington Post on February 6, 2007, distorts the true percentage spent on the military by including Trust Funds (e.g., Social Security). In addition, the pie chart does not distinguishes past military spending from nonmilitary spending.
More accurate figures show that 51% of the tax revenue goes to the military, with $727 billion for current military in 2008, including the $93 billion unbudgeted “emergency supplemental appropriation,” which funds the war in Iraq.
